Bowling has always been a big part of my life. I started bowling when I was about 7 years old, and
continued in junior leagues through high school. After high school, I started competing in adult
leagues, and joined the PBA when I was 19, in 1973. I competed on the PBA Tour from 1973-1974, then
realizing how good the tour players were, I knew I wasn't ready for that level of competition. I
returned to the tour in the fall of 1977 and competed full time until 1994, when I dropped off the
tour.
My tour life had the gamut of emotions and results from the lows of knowing I wasn't good enough to
compete, then having enough success to stay on the tour, then to being known as the 'best player on
tour to never win a tour title, then to the high light of 'THE 300 GAME'. However, though the
notoriety and financial boon of the 300 game was amazing, nothing could compare to winning my 1st
PBA Tour title in 1988 after more than 10 years of efforts. To be forever known as a PBA Tour
Champion is an awesome accomplishment. In fact, I still get chills thinking of that moment when I
could call myself a Champion.
I was truly fortunate to be chosen as the PBA Southwest Regional Director in the Fall of 1996, and
held the position until my retirement in 2022. I loved having that position as I was around PBA
competition and got to watch some great players start their PBA careers in the Southwest Regional
events, i.e., Chris Barnes, Wes Malott, Francois Lavoie, and many others. I got to meet many
proprietors who hosted events, and totally enjoyed the many other people who competed in the events,
and/or came to watch the tournaments.
After retirement, I was anxious to return to competition on the PBA50 Tour. Though my success so far
has been pretty limited there, I am glad for the opportunity to compete.
I was fortunate to win my 1st PBA50 Regional title (8th regional win overall) in 2023.
Probably the biggest honor was in 2021 when PBA Commissioner called me to inform me that I was to be
inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 2022. I was beyond shocked and literally could not speak for
minutes. That is an honor I never could imagine ever happening.
From a teenager joining the Tour in 1973, to winning a PBA50 Regional event at the age of 70, and
being a PBA Hall of Famer, it has truly been a wonderful journey!
