Bowling News USA - January 13, 2014 Dom Finishes Second at BallMaster Open

Mika Koivuniemi of Finland won an unprecedented fourth Ballmaster Open title when he defeated Storm's Dom Barrett in a low-scoring title match, 188-172, to celebrate his ninth victory on the European Bowling Tour and to earn the 12.000 Euro top prize.

The tournament was sponsored by Brunswick.

Koivuniemi, who earned a 3.000 Euro bonus for rolling the tournament's first 300 game during qualifying, also was awarded his 13th career PBA title and his fourth win on the World Bowling Tour.

The biggest check, however, went to Timo Alho, who defeated Koivuniemi in the 300eXtra final to win 20.000 Euro. Koivuniemi left a 2-8-10 split in final roll-off and Alho sealed the victory with a strike.

The top four 48 players, who survived the qualifying, overcame a grueling format on Sunday including an eight-game round a 15-game round robin match play round. In the opening match, World and European champion Joonas Jehkinen of Finland, seeded third, flew past PBA champion Ronnie Russell, United States, 256-184.

No. 2 seed Koivuniemi, who lives in the United States, topped Jehkinen in the semifinal match, 236-201, to bowl top-seeded Barrett for the title.

The eight-time EBT champion, who was looking for his fourth PBA title and his third title out of five events on the 2014 World Bowling Tour, received 8.000 Euro for second place. Jehkinen received 4.000 Euro for third place and Russell took home 3.000 Euro for fourth place.

2013 women's point ranking winner Joline Persson-Planefors Sweden, was the lone woman who advanced to round robin match play finishing in seventh place en route to win the women's ranking in Helsinki.

The 2014 Brunswick Ballmaster Open drew 511 players, 452 men and 59 women.
