Bowling News USA - January 17, 2013 Storm's Rhino Page, Ryan Shafer and Derek Eoff Earn PBA Regional Honors...
After a season in which more than 170 regional and senior regional tournaments were conducted, the PBA announced its 2012 season-ending regional Player of the Year, Senior Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Pat Patterson Award winners.
In the South Region, three-time PBA Tour winner Rhino Page of Dade City, Fla., won his first Player of the Year honor thanks to three wins while cashing and making match play in all seven tournaments he entered. PBA Hall of Famer and long-time PBA Senior Tour host George Pappas of Charlotte earned his third Senior Player of the Year honor also winning three titles. Brandon Bivens of East Ridge, Tenn., earned Rookie of the Year honors cashing in two events and making match play one time.
In the East Region, four-time Tour winner Ryan Shafer of Horseheads, N.Y., won his first Player of the Year title. He had six top-four finishes including two wins, a second, two thirds and one fourth-place finish. Gary Shultis of Levittown, N.Y., took the Senior Player of the Year honor with the help of six top-five finishes that included one title. Earning Rookie of the Year was Tommy Dakouvanos of Belford, N.J., who had one second and one third-place finish.
Earning his first Player of the Year honor in the Central Region was Jeff Zaffino of Warren, Pa., who collected five top-three finishes that included two wins a second and two-thirds. Three–time Senior Tour winner Dale Traber of Cedarburg, Wis. was a double Senior Player of the Year winner earning the crown in both the Central and Midwest Region. He had eight top-five finishes in both regions that included one win and two second-place finishes.
For Traber it was his first Senior Player of the Year crown in the Central and third in the Midwest Region. Earning the Central Region Dan Ottman Rookie of the Year honor was Brandon Novak of Chillicothe, Ohio, who had a best finish of second while cashing and making match play in five tournaments.
Other honorees in the Midwest Region were 2011 USBC Masters Champion Tom Hess of Urbandale, Iowa earning his second Player of the Year honor with eight top-five finishes including one title and two seconds. 2008 World Cup Winner Derek Eoff of Madison, Wis., earned Rookie of the Year honors thanks to a record five consecutive runnerup finishes.
PBA50 Tour star Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, and five-time Tour winner Chris Warren of Grants Pass, Ore., were double winners in PBA’s West and Northwest regions. Warren took home Player of the Year honors in both the West and Northwest Regions. He captured his first West Region honor with eight top-five finishes that included two wins and his fourth Northwest title with 10 top-five finishes including three wins. Mohr, a two-time PBA50 Tour Player of the Year, earned Senior Player of the Year honors in both Regions winning four titles in the West and one in the Northwest. Will Garber of Modesto, Calif., earned West Region Rookie of the Year with a best finish of second and five cashes and four match play appearances.
In the Southwest Region, PBA Tour player Nathan Bohr of Wichita, Kan., earned his fourth Player of the Year crown with the help of seven top-four finishes which included four wins. Sean Lavery-Spahr of Denton, Texas earned Rookie of the Year honors with three top-five finishes that included a second and third. A Senior Player of the Year title is not awarded in the Southwest Region.
PBA also announced Pat Patterson Award winners for each Region. The award is presented to those recognized for contributions to the regional program and are selected by the respective regional managers. They are Mike Hastings, Millsboro, Del. (East); Steve Taylor, Madison Heights, Va. (South); Joe Stalnaker, Alderson, W.Va. (Central); Frank Miceli, Elk Grove Village, Ill. (Midwest); David Anthony, Austin, Texas (Southwest); Ivan Yee, San Francisco (West) and John Gould, Lakeport, Calif. (Northwest).
